Much of what makes a physician good at diagnosis is invisible, even to the physician. The Art of Diagnostic Strategy: The Mind of the Diagnostician, Dr. Taro Shimizu, Professor of Diagnostic Medicine at Dokkyo University, Japan, presents a systematic framework developed over 20 years of practice, research, and teaching that makes this hidden process visible and teachable to clinicians worldwide. With easy-to-remember principles and practical strategies for implementation, The Art of Diagnostic Strategy teaches clinicians how to structure their thinking at the point of care, work with uncertainty rather than against it, and help reduce the risk of diagnostic error.
Provides systematic guiding principles for diagnostic thinking, applicable across diverse clinical settings: outpatient primary care, inpatient hospital wards, emergency rooms, ICUs, and home care
Connects diagnostic decisions, with the human and team practices that shape the art of diagnosis: communication, interprofessional collaboration, feedback integration, and downstream care
Introduces “offensive” strategies (such diagnostic thinking and insight), and “defensive” strategies (such as minimizing uncertainty) with concrete training methods to guide and continuously sharpen your diagnostic skills
Includes case examples that demonstrate how each strategy works at the point of care, adding to your toolkit of strategies for structured thinking
Ideal especially for practitioners in internal medicine, emergency medicine, and general practice, as well as NPs and PAs
