    Description
    This book presents the basic scientific principles of the workings of the musculoskeletal system and their role in clinical practice.
    Purpose
    The purpose is to make available a broad and current knowledge base on tissue structure and function biomechanics, material science, pharmacology, immunology, and physiology. The authors feel that mastery of this information can make for a better surgeon.
    Audience
    The primary audience is orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic trainees.
    Features
    The four major sections cover basic principles of orthopedic surgery, physiology of musculoskeletal tissues, basic principles and treatment of musculoskeletal disease, and clinical science. The third section makes for easier reading than the first two sections, and it presents very relevant information for busy surgeons. Current topics such as cartilage repair and regeneration, tendinopathy, biological response to orthopedic implants, and orthopedic infections are fully covered in this section. Evidence-based medicine, clinical trial design, cost-effectiveness research, healthcare guidelines, ethics in research, and other topics are covered in the final section, which also teaches how to be a more critical reader of the design and recommendations of published medical articles. The references are extensive and current. There are sufficient figures and tables to keep clinicians interested.
    Assessment
    This work represents the combined efforts of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). The four senior editors are active orthopedic clinicians and basic science researchers who are fully aware of the current needs of orthopedic surgeons. The AAOS and ORS are premier educational institutions that know the importance of continuing medical education and their role in making sure that the best possible care is available to all orthopedic patients. As a senior member of both societies, I, too, have witnessed the rapid expansion of orthopedic knowledge in both the clinical and basic sciences. This fourth edition thoroughly reviews the most relevant and important advances in musculoskeletal issues. This timely work is a must have for all medical science libraries around the world. Orthopedists and their trainees are advised to read this book if they hope to offer their patients the best possible care. In a more practical vein, the book improves one's chances of succeeding on required orthopedic examinations.
